The Hardest Effect I Ever Pulled Off

The Hardest Effect I Ever Pulled Off:

Homeland, “The Tradition of Hospitality” (2015), IED explosion

Lesli Linka Glatter, director: Season five was shot in Germany, so when I got the second script and it had a whole huge section in the Syrian-Lebanese border, I thought it was a joke they were playing on me. But unfortunately, it wasn’t. We had to build a whole refugee camp and make it look as if it was on the border. I created this enormous set with NATO stations and tents and hard structures, and like a week before we started to shoot, the set had become so expensive that I had to cut it in half. It meant replanning and redesigning the whole thing, which I did. We added, with effects, thousands of tents in the background, so it felt like it went on for miles and miles and miles. And at the end of it was this huge explosion — Carrie notices that the camp has been evacuated, but she stops the car before the explosion goes off. There’s debris raining everywhere. The car, had it gone ten more feet, it would have exploded. The setup for that, in another language with a new crew, was, uh, funny and challenging and complicated. And that huge explosion, we were working with our German special effects team for the first time. It was quite a bit bigger than what we had talked about. We were all like, “Whoa! That’s dramatic. Maybe a little too dramatic.” So we ended up doing the explosion twice, and using parts of both explosions. It was all very challenging, but ultimately a powerful sequence.

Director/EP Lesli Linka Glatter on working with the main cast of “Homeland”:

New(ish) video. Lesli talks about her experiences working with Claire, Mandy, and Rupert.

Lesli did a full interview (like, 90-minute interview) with the TV Academy, talking about different career highlights (including Homeland), which you can watch on YouTube here. The breakdown of the interview is here

ETA: I watched the Homeland-related partsof this, which is about the first hour (!), and I have to say it was actually super interesting. The interview asks a lot of really good questions and I find Lesli to be much more engaging and insightful when not giving 30-second sound bytes. She talks at length about the process of directing a Homeland episode; the core producing team on the ground each season; key moments in “Q&A,” “The Star,” “The Tradition of Hospitality,” “America First,” and “Paean to the People”; her working relationships with the actors on the show and the writers; and a lot more. Also!! I re-remembered that the season 3 finale leaked a day before it aired and that is something I definitely would not have otherwise remembered ever again in my life. Ain’t life interesting!

Rosamund Pike To Star In ‘The Banker’s Wife’ TV Series From Meredith Stiehm, Lesli Linka Glatter & Federation:

(h/t Julie)

The only way this series could have been more surgically designed for me to watch it is if Claire Danes was in the lead but you know what? There are TWO lead female characters, so time will tell…

My thoughts on this, in the order in which they occurred:

  • So Claire Danes is definitely going to star in this… putting the countdown to the announcement she’s attached at 8-10 months
  • PLEASE GOD LET THIS MEAN THE END OF HOMELAND
  • Maybe my Blythe Danner dream will finally come truehe

Hunting the Con Queen of Hollywood: Who’s the “Crazy Evil Genius” Behind a Global Racket?

Hunting the Con Queen of Hollywood: Who’s the “Crazy Evil Genius” Behind a Global Racket?:

This is a wild story about a global racket in which powerful Hollywood execs–all women, including Lesli Linka Glatter–are being impersonated in order to scam people for thousands of dollars.

Linka Glatter first learned that she was being impersonated from friends and colleagues. “I started getting calls from my agents and managers, friends, and friends of friends — they were all hearing from a fake Lesli Linka Glatter,” she says, “And they would want to know: Am I doing this project? What’s the deal? It was horrifying.”

For a long time, Linka Glatter thought she was alone in being faked. She tried to contact the police and the FBI, but neither showed interest. The amount of money involved was too small, they told her. She hired a private investigator, who discovered that the scammers were using burner phones to cover their tracks and GoDaddy accounts for fake email addresses. She contacted corporate security at a major Hollywood studio, but that didn’t help either. The calls kept coming. One day, a well-known political consultant in Washington got in touch.

“The fake Lesli had contacted him to collaborate on a project, but then she started sounding weirder and weirder and the political consultant called my agents to find out if she was real,” says Linka Glatter. The impersonator had also apparently targeted several technical and military advisers who worked with Linka Glatter on shows like Homeland and The Walking Dead. “People believed there was a real job at the end of this,” she says. “There is a whole group of military people that were targeted.”
