Things Carrie Wore This Week

Well, folks, after a few snoozy episodes, What Carrie Wore This Week is back today with new, fresh life. Literally! Claire is pregnant and that seems to crystallize a whole lot of the head-scratchy wardrobe choices this season, specifically oversized plaid.

We are going in chronological order, which coincidentally means we also get to the save the best for lest. Hit it!

This is the second short-sleeved t-shirt Carrie has worn this year that has those longer sleeves. I think this is a ~style because I went shopping the other day and saw some shirts like this. I don’t personally understand the appeal but it seems Carrie has now shifted to v-necks and has lost the second t-shirt for loungewear and we must agree this is a net positive.

OVERSIZED PLAID OVERSIZED PLAID OVERSIZED PLAID.

Ok, now that that’s outta my system… do we think the oversized plaid was possibly to conceal Claire’s pregnancy? The alternatives are a) Angela Chase homage or b) Carrie LOVES plaid. I honest to God have not been able to tell all season that she’s pregnant (you can tell toward the end of season two, though Claire was also much more pregnant at the end of season two), and it’s unclear who was aware she was pregnant, but who knows.

I like the oversized plaid from a few episodes ago more than this one, and I’m not a fan of this hoodie but I am giving Carrie at least 58 passes because she has done three ECT treatments in a week.

SHE CHANGED HER PANTS. I’m almost in shock. As it were, I really do not like these grey jeans but at least they are not black! Hallelujah! Her grey booties are kinda cute.

Now, the jacket.

image

I am obsessed with this jacket. It’s similar to the one she wore at the end of “Standoff” but most similar to the one she wears in “Marine One.” Look at that collar detail! I think that’s brown corduroy. I just like the idea that Carrie has at least three army green light jackets in her wardrobe and she decides to bring one of them, along with her oversized plaid and grey jeans, to the hospital.

But also, like, who got these clothes? Maybe it was Anson? Maybe that explains why they are dressed similarly? Maybe that explains why she’s wearing the grey jeans. Maybe when he brought them to her she was like “holy shit! I owned a different color of pant???” (P.S. I just bought a jacket at J.Crew that I’m calling my “Marine One” jacket and you can check it out here and it is very cute!) (Now I also kinda want this one.)

I think this is another v-neck but notably it’s different than what she was wearing at the beginning of the episode which means Carrie has TWO sets of pajamas with her. We went like two whole episodes TWICE this season where Carrie didn’t change her clothes and now she’s changing her pajamas from one day to the next? Ok, show.

THIS WRAP COAT. OH MY GOD???? What the hell is this even? I tried to get a full-length shot. It actually looks pretty damn good on her but I do not buy that Carrie Mathison–in any realm–bought that coat. It doesn’t pass the sniff test. It looks fucking great but it is not something that Carrie Mathison would buy. (Carrie wears a lot of grey in this episode up until the very end and I bet that signifies the grey area she’s wading in trying to make this decision but this is NOT a series where we attempt to mine real narrative and/or literary meaning from her clothes!)

So firstly, this suit is pretty unremarkable. She pairs it with that lovely cream sweater, and Carrie, let me tell you. That is your look! The sweater with a blazer. It looks like she’s going there again next week. Let go of the sleeveless blouse, girl. Set yourself free.

Now secondly, the jewelry. First, those gold studs which we might have seen last season though I cannot confirm (read: am too lazy to check). They look nice though. When Carrie had that hearing in “Game On” she also went all out with the heels and suit and earrings and you can tell she’s doing the same thing here. Which, duh, of course she should. It’s just interesting.

Also, that pendant necklace. It’s very pretty and similar to the one Maggie is wearing (the Mathison sisters are actually dressed very similarly in this scene but again, NOT THE TIME) but it’s more significant to me because I think it’s the first time we’ve ever seen Carrie wear a necklace. I’m not kidding. It’s such an odd detail, considering it may be the first in seven years. What’s the story behind this necklace? Both in canon and also, who picked this out and told Claire to put it on?

Three words: BLACK. BOATNECK. SWEATER.

Goddamn, Carrie looks so beautiful here. She’s changed her earrings to the small gold hoops (good on you, Carrie) and switched back into her black pants but I can’t even be bothered to whine about them because she looks so fucking amazing here! This all-black ensemble is everything. That boatneck sweater is everything. Carrie really looks pretty amazing in sweaters of all necklines so I think the shift toward colder weather filming has been a net positive for her wardrobe (also, hats!). Anyway, I’m just gonna bask in the dark shadows of this black ensemble because she looks so great and after this hellish episode I deserve it.

A+, Carrie. A fucking plus.

I just had to show this GIGANTOR black coat. I know she’s going to Russia, but it’s also like mid-April… does she really need that? It was ~50 degrees the other day in NYC and I saw MULTIPLE people walking down the streets in waist- or knee-length Canada Goose jackets. Don’t be like them, Carrie. Just don’t. (Can she even move her arms in that thing?)

IN CONCLUSION: CORDUROY DETAIL. ALL GREY EVERYDAY. BLACK BOATNECK SWEATER

The episode opens with a calm, dazed Carrie being wheeled into a hospital room to undergo her third and last ECT treatment. It’s a striking, abrupt shift from the last moments of “Useful Idiot,” where Carrie is crouched against a wall, screaming in horror at the delusions her own mind has created.

The time jump between episodes is about a week, and this opening scene has a lot of ground to cover. Where is Carrie? What’s happening to her? And, most importantly, how is she feeling? In a sense, it needs to provide us, the audience, that same sense of clarity that Carrie finally achieves by episode’s end.

These two shots, filmed from Carrie’s perspective, rendering the subjects blurry and out of focus (ironic, we know), do a lot of that work.

The parallels between Carrie’s ECT in this episode and the one we see at the end of “Marine One” are so blatantly obvious that it feels almost ridiculous to point them out. But Sara will never pass up an opportunity to talk about “Marine One.” First, we should acknowledge the rhythm and choreography of ECT is likely very similar session to session, and even hospital to hospital. It’s like drawing parallels between two appendectomies on Grey’s Anatomy. For a medical procedure, how many different ways are there to do it?

In the editing room, though, it’s clear they made a purposeful decision to connect the two, from the winced face Carrie makes, to the shot of her twitching leg, to the birds eye view of her face post-procedure.
